James C. Hogan diary, 1852-1855, 1858-1859.

Diary kept by James C. Hogan, attorney of Lexington, Ky., who served as attorney for the city in 1853 and again in 1858. He notes Judge W. C. Goodloe's charge to the grand jury, June 14, 1852, in which the judge alluded to the amount of homicide and gaming in Lexington; reports R. N. Wickliffe's speech before a meeting of Democrats on the same day; records the death of Henry Clay and attendance at his funeral; reports the speech of Thomas F. Marshall at first meeting of the Winfield Scott Club, Aug. 7, 1852; records votes cast in city election for attorney, Jan. 1, 1853, resulting in his own election; records decisions in cases before the Lexington City Court and the city grand jury and gives digests of the more important cases; notes his failure to win reelection, Jan. 7, 1854, and his resumption of duties as city attorney, Jan. 7, 1858; makes memoranda on his private practice.
